Dog Psychology 101

K-911 addresses the following behaviors:

  • Aggression Towards Dogs
  • Aggression Towards Strangers
  • Aggression Towards Owners
  • On-Leash Aggression
  • Fear-Based Aggression
  • Fear/Shyness of Strangers
  • Overstimulation/Hyperactive Behavior
  • Resource Guarding/Possession (toys, food, bones, etc.)
  • Phobias (fireworks, thunderstorms, car rides, etc.)
  • Other behaviors not addressed through regular obedience training

The K-911 Program is for dogs exhibiting behaviors that are not addressed in group classes. This program gives you a better understanding of your dog's behavior, including an understanding of your dog's body language, teaches you safe management techniques, gives you the tools to safely change your dog's behavior in the situations that trigger the problem behavior and, how to teach your dog alternate behaviors through positive counter-conditioning methods.

For some dogs, Day Training services are available. Not all behaviors will be appropriate for Day Training services.

PLEASE NOTE: We do not employ or advocate the methods seen on 'The Dog Whisperer'.

Our training and behavior programs focus on the use of positive reinforcement methods. These methods are proven to successfully modify serious problem behaviors. Punishing a dog for exhibiting problem behaviors, simply suppresses those behaviors temporarily.

Behavior modification, unlike suppression of behavior, takes time, repetition, consistency and commitment on the part of you, the dog owner. You must be able to practice exercises between sessions to be see improvement in your dog's behavior.

Read more about why we do not advocate the methods seen on the show.

COST

$125.00 per session. The inital behavior evaluation is approximately 90 minutes and training sessions run approximately 1 hour. Each session is scheduled with the Head Trainer.

WHAT TO EXPECT

At the initial behavior evaluation, the trainer will evaluate your dog and assess the underlying cause of your dog's behavior. In addition to the assessment, the trainer will provide you with recommendations for immediate changes at home that can start to improve your dog's behavior. From there, a number of training sessions will be recommended based on the problem behavior, your dog's current level of training and your goals.

Each additional session will focus on the exercises necessary to change your dog's behavior with continued phone and email support with your trainer throughout the program, even after you have completed your training.

The number of sessions depends on the presenting behavior problem, including the type and severity, the length of time the dog has exhibited the behavior and the dog's current level of obedience training.

Owners of dogs which are exhibiting aggression towards other dogs while on leash can expect to start with six sessions after the behavior evaluation. This includes obedience training, which gives the owner more control. Dogs that have a solid foundation of obedience may require fewer sessions.

Most other behaviors will require between one and three sessions, depending on the individual dog and presented behavior.

Scheduled payments via credit card are available

VETERINARY EXAM

A veterinary exam may be required prior to your initial appointment to rule out any physical causes for your dog's behavior. If your dog has not received a veterinary exam in more than one year or your dog's behavior has suddenly changed within the last few months, please call your veterinarian and schedule an exam before your first K911 appointment.

EUTHANASIA

It is the policy of 4Paws University not to make a recommendation for euthanasia as we believe this is a personal choice to be made by owners after considering all factors, including severity and predictability of behavior, response to behavior modification, effective management and potential liability. Our role in this regard is to provide the owner with a clear view of those factors. If euthanasia is a consideration by the owner, we will offer consultation and appropriate referrals for additional opinions as necessary.
