DESCRIPTION
Building on the dog's basic obedience foundation, we build up the reliability of those commands around increased distance and distraction. Exercises covered include, but are not limited to:
- Heeling with precision and around distractions, both on and off-leash
- Off-leash recall
- Long-distance exercises (sit, down, stand, etc.)
- Long-distance Wait (holding sit or down until called)
- Drop on movement for emergency control
- Advanced exercises for focus, performance and control
- Tricks
Because the ultimate goal of this course is for students to learn the skills necessary to teach their dog to be reliable off-leash, emphasis is placed on precision and reliability.
*Non-graduates of the 4Paws University training program may require an evaluation (no charge) to determine suitability for this class.
Dogs eligible to start in Intermediate/Advanced Obedience must be able to perform the following around reasonable distractions as can be found in a public park:
- Focus on owner
- Sit, Down and Stand without lure in hand
- 'Leave It' - dog leaves item and looks at owner
- Stay/Wait for 15 seconds
- Name recognition (dog must respond to his/her name)
- Heel while focused on owner for up to 20'
Owner should have a basic understanding of the principles of how to mark behavior with the use of a verbal marker or clicker (clickers are not required).
If your dog does not meet all of the above criteria, we recommend the Beginning Obedience class.
Note: This class is not appropriate for dogs who exhibit aggressive behaviors towards other dogs or people. If your dog has a problem behavior, please visit the K911 section.
