WHAT TO ASK YOUR VET |
|||||||||
|
By Lisa Mullinax Taking a sick or injured dog to the vet can be very scary when you don’t understand what your veterinarian is saying. By getting more information and doing a little research on your own, you can get a clear picture of your dog’s health and make educated decisions. Ask questions!
If you don’t understand what your vet is saying, ask them to clarify.
We cannot stress this enough! Ask for the spelling of diagnosis, medications,
etc. Ask to see lab results and x-rays. Have your vet explain what they are seeing and what it means. Ask about alternative treatments. Rimadyl and other prescriptions can be hard on your dog’s system. Ask your vet if alternative treatments like Glucosamine are an option and the recommended dosage. Your vet may even carry chewable, flavored versions of these supplements!
A simple internet search can also turn up a wealth of information! Make Suggestions. If your research has turned up some information or treatment that your vet hasn’t mentioned, don’t be afraid to show them what you’ve found. If they don’t think it’s helpful, ask them why. Rate your veterinarian just as you would your family doctor. If you don’t like their bedside manner or feel they’re not doing enough, get a second opinion! By doing your homework, you can make informed decisions regarding your dog’s care and maybe even save yourself from expensive veterinary bills! |
